Building local democracy, one community at a time
Canopy Commons builds civic infrastructure that helps people participate meaningfully in decisions that shape their lives, where they live.
The problem we’re addressing
People care about their communities, but participation remains weak.
Unclear pathways
Citizens want to engage in decisions around water, waste, safety, public spaces or transport — but the pathways to do so are confusing, exhausting and reactive.
Momentum fades
Civic action spikes during moments and fades soon after. Participation is not designed to sustain itself.
Fragmented infrastructure
Trust between citizens and authorities is fragile. Meaningful civic infrastructure is often fragmented or missing.
People disengage because the system makes participation hard to sustain.
“Democracy must be viewed as a practice , and not just participation.”
Participation becomes meaningful only when people have regular spaces, shared tools, and the confidence to engage with our everyday institutions over time.
Canopy Commons focuses on building the everyday conditions that allow participation to be sustained, especially at the hyperlocal level where decisions matter the most.
